About UNCI Uganda

Upper Nile Conservation Initiative (UNCI) is an indigenous Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) registered with the National Bureau for Non-Governmental Organizations in Uganda in 2018, whose scope is to operate country wide. 

Mission

To empower communities across Uganda through integrated, community-driven programs in health, reproductive rights, HIV/AIDS response, environmental conservation, and vocational education for sustainable development.

Vision

A healthy, skilled, and empowered Ugandan society living in harmony with a protected and sustainable environment.

Goal

To improve the quality of life and resilience of communities in Uganda through inclusive and sustainable health, education, environmental, and HIV/AIDS interventions.

Core Objectives

1. Health & Reproductive Rights:

Enhance access to quality healthcare and promote positive health-seeking behaviors. Address reproductive health challenges by ending child marriage and teenage pregnancies.

2. HIV/AIDS Response:

Reduce HIV transmission rates through prevention, education, and testing. Support people living with HIV/AIDS with care, treatment, and psychosocial services.

3. Environmental Conservation:

Promote environmental protection, tree planting, and natural resource sustainability. Increase community awareness on climate change adaptation and mitigation.

4. Education & Vocational Skilling:

Provide vocational training for youth and women to improve employability and income generation. Expand access to non-formal education, especially for out-of-school adolescents.

Program Areas and Activities

1. Health & Reproductive Rights

Focus:

Community health education, sexual and reproductive health (SRH), ending child marriage and teenage pregnancy.

Key Activities:

Conduct mobile outreach clinics in rural and hard-to-reach areas. SRH education in schools and communities. Train health workers and peer educators. Engage cultural and religious leaders to challenge harmful norms. Facilitate access to contraceptives and adolescent-friendly health services. Support safe spaces and mentoring for adolescent girls.

2. HIV/AIDS Response

Focus:

Prevention, awareness, treatment, and stigma reduction.

Key Activities:

Community-based HIV testing and counseling. School-based HIV prevention education. Provide antiretroviral treatment (ART) linkage and adherence support. Organize support groups for people living with HIV/AIDS. Conduct campaigns to eliminate stigma and discrimination.

3. Environmental Conservation

Focus:

Climate action, ecosystem protection, and sustainable resource use.

Key Activities:

Tree planting and afforestation programs. Environmental education campaigns in schools and communities. Train farmers on climate-smart agriculture techniques. Promote clean energy alternatives (e.g., solar, improved cookstoves). Community clean-up drives and waste management sensitization.

4. Education & Vocational Skilling

Focus:

Skills development, literacy, economic empowerment.

Key Activities:

Establish and support vocational training centers for youth and women. Offer training in tailoring, carpentry, mechanics, ICT, hairdressing, agribusiness, etc. Provide startup toolkits or capital for small businesses. Promote adult literacy and numeracy classes. Support apprenticeships and job placement programs. Conduct life skills and entrepreneurship training.
